CHAPTER 30
I WAS ABOUT to call Moira and fill her in on the Theodore Raskin connection when I glanced up and saw the Nissan Sentra emerging from Pineview Court onto the highway. Shit. If it turned right, it would come toward me. If Timmins saw me, word would get back to Angela or Raskin or whoever was pulling the strings that I hadnât just asked some questions then gone back to San Diego. Theyâd know I was staking out the connection to Angelaâs daughter and was determined to find Angela.
The Sentra turned left and headed in the direction of the tiny town of Pine Mountain Club. Too far away to be certain that no one was in the passenger seat, but I sensed it was empty. For whatever that was worth. My senses were hit and miss lately. Out of practice.
I checked the tracking app on my phone. It showed the red dot for the Sentra moving east on Mil Potrero Highway. Good. It worked. Follow the Sentra and whoever was driving it from afar or break into Claire Timminsâs house and look for signs of Angela? Or anything else that could help me figure out what was going on?
I started the car and pulled onto the highway. Twenty seconds later, I turned left onto Pineview Court and parked under a pine tree two houses up from Claire Timminsâs home. Out of range from her Ring doorbell camera.
I put on the PMC ball cap. I wanted to change my appearance enough from last night. The Pine Mountain Club sweatshirt would help, too.
I got out of the car, opened the trunk, and pulled up the covering exposing the spare tire well. I unzipped the duffle bag and rummaged through what police would rightfully call a burglar kit. The duct tape and plastic cuffs would signal something more sinister than burglary to the police. I had a different intent for the items, but there wouldnât be a good explanation for anything in the bag if I was ever caught with it.
I pulled out a couple black nitrile gloves from a box and put them on. Next, I found the small plastic case containing my lock pick set. I slipped the set in my back pocket. Lastly, I pulled out the latest addition to my black bag. A home security alarm jammer. It was black, about three by five inches with three straight black antennae sticking out of the top. Not infallible, but it had worked the one time Iâd used it.
I stuck the jammer in the Pine Mountain Club hoodie front pocket and went behind the first house and walked under pine trees outside the backyard fence. The lot was huge, as was the next, and it took me almost a full minute to get behind Claire Timminsâs house. I hoped she didnât have a Ring alarm or any security camera in her backyard. Or a dog.
The yard was anchored by a pine fence about six feet high and well over a hundred feet long.
